Electricity Challenges: NEMSA, LECAN Collaborate to Improve Power Supply
By Seyifunmi Odunuga
The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) has identified aging infrastructure, insufficient generation, and vandalism as major factors affecting electricity supply in Nigeria. Mr. Sakariyau Babatunde, NEMSA Area Inspection Engineer, Ibadan, stated this during the 2025 Anniversary of the Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN) at Dapo Aderogba Hall, Nuj Press Center in Ibadan.
Babatunde emphasized the importance of electricity in driving socio-economic development, technology, and industrialization, calling for collaboration among stakeholders to address the country's electricity challenges. He urged licensed electrical contractors to adhere to standard wire installation procedures to reduce power fluctuations, overloads, and system failures.
LECAN Chairman, Oyo State, Mr. Sylvester Gbogi, urged the government and Nigerians to patronize licensed electrical contractors to prevent electrical accidents. He also called for more government recognition and support for licensed electrical bodies.
Other speakers at the event, including the President of the Tradesmen and Artisan Association of Nigeria and the immediate past Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical Electronics Engineers (NIEEE), Ibadan Chapter, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the critical role of LECAN in stabilizing Nigeria's electricity supply.
During the event, LECAN Oyo State Chapter conferred a Grand Patron Award on Hon. Aderemi Oseni, member representing Ibarapa East/Ido Constituency in Oyo State, for his exceptional service and contributions to the growth and operational strength of LECAN.
