2027: PDP disowns purported plan to affirm Goodluck Jonathan as presidential candidate, slams reports as charade
By Seyifunmi Odunuga
— The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly debunked media reports suggesting an upcoming national convention to affirm former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
In a strongly worded press statement issued on Friday, May 29, 2026, the main opposition party described the rumors as completely unfounded, unauthorized, and a calculated attempt by mischief-makers to ignite unnecessary political tension across the country.
The disclaimer, signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, maintained that the party’s leadership has not approved or scheduled any such meeting or consensus alignment. The statement clarified that the PDP has already successfully wrapped up all its official primary elections, including gubernatorial, state houses of assembly, National Assembly, and presidential primaries, strictly adhering to the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the party’s constitution.
The main opposition party further disclosed that all internal electoral processes were fully monitored and validated by INEC officials in a peaceful manner, leaving no legal or constitutional room for any supplementary "affirmation" convention.
Reacting to the development, the party directly called on former President Jonathan to break his silence and publicly distance himself from the circulating reports. According to the PDP, a public disclaimer from the former leader is vital to safeguarding his hard-earned democratic credentials and protecting the integrity of the nation's political structures.
The PDP leadership also tasked national security agencies to swiftly investigate the root source of the false reports and bring the perpetrators to book. Warning that it would no longer tolerate its image being dragged into disrepute through coordinated misinformation campaigns, the party urged its members, loyal stakeholders, and the general public to disregard the rumors and rely strictly on official communications from authorized party channels.
