Tension As Makinde Keeps Successor's Identity Secret Amid Ongoing PDP Realignment

​Strong indications emerged on Sunday that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, is set to spring a surprise at his scheduled declaration this week by keeping the identity of his anointed successor under wraps.

​The move has heightened tension within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as grassroots leaders and Southwest stakeholders express deep anxiety over the direction of the state's political future.

​Governor Makinde, who has been engaging in high-level consultations regarding political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, is expected to make an official announcement this week regarding his next political platform.

​Findings by our correspondent reveal that a meeting of Southwest PDP stakeholders, which ended in the early hours of Sunday in Ibadan, ended in confusion. Party faithful and grassroots leaders expressed frustration over the secrecy surrounding the transition plan.

​While names such as Bimbo Adekanmbi have been heavily speculated in political circles as possible frontrunners, the Governor's camp has maintained a strict silence, leaving party leaders and aspirants guessing.

​A top party chieftain stated that the grassroots and party executives are anxious to know the specific individual who will be carrying the party's flag and expressed concern over making decisions without knowing the successor.

​The situation in Oyo State unfolds against the backdrop of broader realignments within the opposition. Following the Supreme Court judgment on the PDP's leadership tussle, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, formally dumped the party and defected to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) along with members of the PDP loyal to the Tanimu Turaki-led executives.  

​Governor Mohammed cited the protracted national leadership dispute as a primary factor for exiting the platform, stating the need to provide a stable and coherent structure for his supporters ahead of the 2027 elections.  

​Political watchers note that Makinde's planned declaration this week may follow a similar trajectory of realignment, though the lack of clarity regarding his successor continues to create friction among local stakeholders.
