Absolute Panic Hits Ibadan Media Space Over Sudden Disengagement of 14 Broadcast Workers
Sacked Personnel Cry Out To Oyo NUJ, Label Management's Action 'Baseless'
– Panic and deep anxiety have gripped the Ibadan media community following a massive purging at Dominion Broadcast Group, which has left no fewer than fourteen media professionals suddenly out of work.
The sweeping disengagement at the media outfit—owners of Dominion Radio and Television—has sent shockwaves through the industry, forcing the affected broadcasting stars and production staff to launch a passionate, urgent cry for help to the Oyo State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
When our correspondent visited the broadcasting complex, an uncomfortable quietness hung over the studios that usually buzz with creative activity.
Security personnel at the entrance were on high alert, carefully scrutinizing visitors, while inside the premises, some of the affected staff were spotted in small clusters, staring at their termination letters in absolute disbelief. The usual lively pre-show banter between on-air personalities and the production crew was completely absent, replaced by a palpable fear among the remaining workforce who now worry over their own job security.
Speaking to further on the condition of anonymity, several of the affected workers expressed deep frustration and trauma over the development.
They described the sudden mass termination as entirely baseless, claiming it violated standard labor practices and lacked any fair administrative process.
Many lamented that they had dedicated their professional energy to building the station's brand, only to be discarded overnight without justifiable cause.
The disengaged personnel further alleged that this abrupt move not only threatens their livelihoods but also strikes a blow against the dignity of the media profession. Left with no immediate recourse, they have formally called on the leadership of the Oyo State NUJ, led by Comrade Akeem Abas, to swiftly wade into the crisis, investigate what they termed the high-handedness of the management, and defend media workers from arbitrary layoffs.
As at the time of filing this report, the management of Dominion Broadcast Group has not released an official statement to clarify the criteria used for the mass retrenchment or to calm the rising tension within the organization.
Meanwhile, pressure continues to mount on the Oyo NUJ to take a decisive stand against the worsening trend of sudden job losses in the state's media sector.
