Iyin Union Seeks Oyebanji’s Intervention in Chair Controversy

The Iyin Development Federal Union, the socio-cultural umbrella body for indigenes of Iyin-Ekiti, has appealed to the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, to use his good offices to resolve the controversy surrounding a chair reportedly used by him during a recent church programme in the community.

The appeal was contained in a statement issued in Iyin-Ekiti on Saturday and signed by the union’s President, Hon. Funso Adesokan, and National Secretary, Hon. Tope Akindele.

The union said it was aware of ongoing efforts by well-meaning individuals to de-escalate the situation and restore the cordial relationship between the Oluyin of Iyin, Oba Adeniyi Ajakaiye, the people of Iyin and the state government.

The IDFU said it would not engage in a fresh narration of the events that led to the disagreement, expressing confidence that the matter could be resolved through dialogue.

“We believe the unfortunate misunderstanding on the matter is capable of being fully and amicably resolved through that process,” the union stated.

The group described Oyebanji as a friend and close associate of the Oluyin, adding that the governor was also a distinguished son of Iyin by affiliation.

It commended the governor’s administration for its contributions to the development of Iyin-Ekiti and for creating opportunities for many indigenes of the community to participate in government.

According to the union, the Oluyin and people of Iyin continue to hold the governor in high regard despite the recent development.

The IDFU also reaffirmed its “unalloyed respect, confidence and loyalty” to Oba Ajakaiye, while stressing its respect for the traditional institution and the Christian community in Iyin-Ekiti.

The union urged the public to disregard unverified reports circulating on social media and allow the matter to be handled through established peace-building channels.

It also appealed to Iyin sons and daughters, well-wishers and media practitioners to exercise restraint and avoid amplifying narratives capable of creating unnecessary tension or damaging longstanding relationships.

“The IDFU reaffirms its commitment to constructive engagement and asks all well-meaning Nigerians to allow peace to reign while dialogue continues through the appropriate channels,” the statement concluded.
