Why is Chief Adebayo Adelabu not loved by many?

He's one of the most brilliant minds Oyo State has ever produced, he is an astute businessman with many of his businesses here in Oyo State, he's from a strong family legacy in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in the South West.

As a mark of respect to Nigerians and high level of humility, he came out yesterday to apologize for the unfortunate state of the power sector in the country, personally, I have accepted his apologies as a Minister whose ministry has underperformed. From the outset, I knew there was little he could do to significantly improve it. If figures like Raji Fashola, late Bola Ige, Olusegun Agagu or Liyel Imoke couldn’t fix Nigeria’s electricity problems, it was clear that Adelabu could only do his best which, unfortunately, may never be enough.

But beyond the apologies, beyond his many businesses in Oyo State, beyond his wealth and family influence, I believe Adelabu needs a personal rebranding, something that would make people genuinely like and relate to him. In Oyo State, where he should command widespread respect and affection, at least 6 out of 10 non-politicians reportedly don’t like him. I honestly don’t understand what has created this negative perception of his personality. If you doubt this, conduct a quick opinion poll or go out for a vox pop on the streets. Idris Animasaun recently did a poll comparing him with Oloye Saheed Oladele, and the results were quite shocking. 

With the Oyo State governorship election approaching, many feel it would be a serious mistake for the APC to field him as their candidate. And yet, by every objective measure, he should be among the favorites. Aside from Gov Seyi Makinde, few politicians have the aura to match him. He is a serving federal minister, a trusted “son” of the President, financially secure, and politically experienced. Sadly, many people still fail to see him as a winning candidate.

Oyo State people, what is the “sin” of Adebayo Adelabu? He is a proud son of this land, someone we should all celebrate and be proud of.
