Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’ Reportedly Dies After Prolonged Battle With Cancer

LAGOS — Veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has reportedly died after a prolonged battle with cancer.

The news of the actor’s reported death emerged days after his daughters publicly appealed for urgent medical assistance for their father, revealing that he was battling Stage Four cancer and required specialised treatment.

Hassan, one of the most respected figures in the Yoruba film industry, was said to have been in critical condition in recent weeks as his health continued to deteriorate.

His family had earlier disclosed that doctors could no longer continue chemotherapy because of the advanced stage of the disease.

The development had triggered widespread concern among his colleagues, fans and well-wishers, with prayers and messages of support pouring in from across Nigeria and beyond.

Ogogo was a household name in the Nigerian film industry, having built a remarkable career spanning more than four decades. He was widely admired for his commanding screen presence and memorable performances in numerous Yoruba and Nollywood productions.

Born in Ilaro, Ogun State, Hassan began his acting career in the early 1980s and gradually rose to prominence through his appearances in several popular Yoruba films. His ability to portray strong, authoritative and heroic characters earned him a loyal following across generations.

Beyond acting, the veteran also made significant contributions to the indigenous film industry as a producer and director, further cementing his position as one of the prominent figures in Yoruba entertainment.

Following reports of his death, tributes have begun to pour in from fellow actors, filmmakers, fans and cultural organisations, with many describing him as a legend whose contributions played an important role in the development of Yoruba cinema.

However, details surrounding his death and funeral arrangements had yet to be officially announced by the family as of the time of filing this report.

Hassan is survived by his children and extended family.
